The dot cake trend has taken the baking world by storm, captivating dessert lovers everywhere with its playful design and delightful taste. Originating from a small bakery in New York City, this cake has quickly become a viral sensation. Its simple yet striking appearance, featuring colorful dots scattered across the top. What makes it especially fun is to make it in small serving sizes.

I made mine in cute little glass jars -- the perfect serving size if you ask me. But careful, it gets messy when you eat it.

Recipe

Prepare the boxed cake mix per the directions. I have found this one is the best tasting mix -- it tastes so good you won't believe it's from a box. However, place it in a 18x13 cookie sheet for about 20 minutes at 350°F (175°C).

Once baked and cooled. Place your glass jars with the opening down on the cake and press down to fill the cups with the cake. I also recommend scooping up more from the remnants to fill the cup up with more of the cake before you frost them. The more cake smashed in, the better.

Top them with the frosting

(I halved the recipe when making this -- it was good for 12 servings, but if you want to make more using the leftover cake surrounding the cutouts, you will want to make the full recipe)

My Favorite Frosting

  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened

  • 3/4 cup butter, room temperature

  • 6 cups powdered sugar

  • 1/2 T vanilla

  • 1 T milk (optional for thinning)

Beat the cream cheese and butter with an electric mixer at medium speed for about one minute. Add the vanilla and beat one minute more. Reduce the mixing speed to low, and add the powdered sugar about 1/2 cup at a time. Once the sugar is completely incorporated, beat at medium speed for about two minutes or until fluffy.

Preparing the Buttercream Frosting

  1. Beat the softened butter until creamy.

  2. Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition.

  3. Mix in vanilla extract.

  4. Add heavy cream or milk one tablespoon at a time until the frosting reaches a spreadable consistency.

  5. Divide the frosting into small bowls and add different food coloring to each to create your dot colors.

Assembling and Decorating the Cake

Once frosted, immediately dip the top of the cakes into a plate full of sprinkles.

For added fun, string ribbon around each one. I recommend storing them in the refrigerator or freezer until ready to serve. Enjoy!
